The Sunnyside Shines BID and the Sunnyside Chamber of Commerce joined with community leaders and residents to kick off the “shop local” holiday season in Sunnyside. In a holiday lighting ceremony under the Sunnyside arch, Council Member Van Bramer led the crowd in a countdown to illuminate lights on two trees on 46th Street. He was joined by Senator Michael Gianaris, 108th Precinct Captain Brian Hennessy and Father Brian Dowd to address the crowd and mark the beginning of the holiday season. The event began with carolers from the LaGuardia Community College vocal program and was followed by a rousing performance from the Sunnyside Drum Corps, led by Tony Lana. Swain Weiner, President of the Sunnyside Chamber of Commerce, and John Vogt, Chairman of the Sunnyside Shines BID, welcomed the crowd and emceed the event.
Rachel Thieme, executive director of Sunnyside Shines, announced that November 30th is Small Business Saturday and encouraged the crowd to shop local in Sunnyside throughout the holiday season. Santa made a special appearance to hand out candy canes and cookies to children. White Castle provided free hot chocolate and Bing’s Hallmark distributed holiday ornaments.
