In the span of a half hour, customers popped into small business owner Tony Zhang's New Jenny Dry Cleaners, at 43-18 Greenpoint Avenue, with hopes of recovering their garments from rips, stains, wrinkles, and pizza oil. Some were long-time customers who have been going to Tony's for years, another was referred, and yet another grew up in Sunnyside as a child but recently moved back to the neighborhood and was looking for a go-to dry cleaner.
Originally from Fuzhou, China, Tony immigrated to the United States in 1991 and settled in New York City, where his family and friends were located. From there, he immersed himself with work in the Manhattan garment business until he took over New Jenny Dry Cleaners, right in-between restaurants I Love Paraguay and Mr. Burrito. Tony bought the dry cleaning business from the previous owner in 2006 because he felt that there were nice people in the neighborhood with good foot traffic within the commercial district. "Back in 2006, the cost of running the business was lower with less competition. Now business is steady; we have long-time customers who trust our service. Some even come back when they move to other parts of the city. But it's still hard for us to attract the new residents and the younger generation," Tony shares in Cantonese, one of three Chinese dialects he speaks, alongside English.
Tony opens up shop from 7:30 AM - 7 PM, 6 days a week (Monday - Saturday). He cites Lenny's Pizza and Green Valley Supermarket as some of his favorite spots in Sunnyside for a quick bite to eat. In addition to in-store dry cleaning, New Jenny Dry Cleaners offers expert tailoring service.
