Tony Oh sees the magic in Sunnyside
After 12 years, Metro Sports continues to be Sunnyside’s go-to spot for athletic footwear and apparel. Manager Tony Oh, whose family owns the store, strives to expand the store’s inventory to serve an entire family’s needs.
Oh has his finger on the pulse of Sunnyside. “When we first opened in 2005, 80% of our customers were men,” he told us, “but now women and children make up almost half our customer base. People are shopping for the whole family.” With this keen eye towards the changing neighborhood, Oh has adjusted his inventory accordingly to offer more women’s and children’s shoes, as well as shoes for a range of price points. Displayed prominently in the store are the same style of shoes in a variety of sizes and categories. Metro Sports is an authorized retailer of big shoe brands like Nike, Jordan, Adidas and Puma, and recently started carrying Converse to offer more affordable selections to customers.
Oh decided to renovate the store a few years ago because he sees a lot of potential in Sunnyside. “We’re seeing more foot traffic these days and the neighborhood is more diverse than ever,” Oh said. We’re glad to hear it!
